Connected Lock: A Game-Changer for METRO SA's Supply Chain

METRO SA, is a leading Greek retail supermarket chain with a strong presence in the country's business landscape, committed to supporting Greek consumers and households. The company promotes Greek products and small producers, supports independent professionals, and provides employment to thousands of employees.

In the past years, METRO faced significant challenges in managing their cargo’s integrity, while using plastic seals. To address these issues, a year ago METRO adopted G4S Telematix's Connected Lock, an advanced remote monitoring system, which brought a wave of innovation and improvement.

The primary issues included the high cost of plastic seals, environmental impact, lack of real-time monitoring, and manual processes prone to human error. The Connected Lock, a 4G electronic seal with GPS and a high-capacity battery, was integrated into METRO's fleet in order to replace the use of plastic seals. This innovative system offers real-time tracking and remote access, enhancing security and operational efficiency.

With features like automated daily reporting and secure RFID card access, the Connected Lock enables precise monitoring of vehicle activities and provides alerts for potential security breaches. The system's implementation results in substantial cost savings, improves time efficiency, and enhances security, with no theft incidents reported so far. Moreover, it supports METRO's environmental goals by reducing plastic waste and CO2 emissions.

The implementation of the Connected Lock has proven to be a transformative solution, significantly enhancing the efficiency, security, and sustainability of METRO's supply chain operations. This success story was recognized with a Silver Award at the Supply Chain Awards 2023, showcasing the substantial impact of advanced telematics in modern logistics.
